The U.S. Department of Justice recently found that a nursing home in El Paso, Texas, has been operating under substandard conditions after failing to comply with close to 80% of the state standards mandated for nursing homes.
According to reports, the El Paso State Supported Living Center underwent monitoring reports after several complaints. The results indicate that the center has failed to meet the most basic requirements of nursing homes, including standard health care and the safety needs of the patients, leading to severe cases of nursing home abuse and neglect. In one instance, a nursing home resident experienced a substantial amount of weight loss in a short period of time. When a relative visited, the resident complained of hunger pains.
In addition, the monitoring results confirmed that several patients were not only going hungry, but were experiencing neglect and abuse. At least 21 cases of neglect and 16 cases of abuse were confirmed.
Meanwhile, state legislators have met with the loved ones of the victims to learn more about the complaints of nursing home abuse and neglect, and to discuss solutions. Should they decide, the relatives of the victims have the legal right to retain a Texas nursing home abuse attorney and sue for personal injury damages.
