Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine has sent out a letter to nursing homes and other care facilities throughout the state reminding them that by law they must report suspected illegal activity, including medication theft in nursing homes.

The Ohio state government also provides assistance in prosecuting those suspected of stealing patient medications.

Over the last several years there have been a number of Ohio nurses convicted of stealing patient medications, either to feed their own addiction, or sell the drugs to others. And each time this form of nursing home abuse happens it means a patient is being deprived of the medications they need.

Recent cases include nurses stealing Percocet and Oxycodone pills, and a nurse stealing prescription pain patches.

In addition to targeting abuse in nursing homes and other care facilities, this recent crack down aims to also reduce the number of people illegally using prescription drugs, which has led to high numbers of overdose related deaths.
