A former nursing home employee of the Quail Creek Nursing Home was caught on tape in a severe nursing home abuse incident that has landed her in jail in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
According to reports, a hidden camera in the room of 96-year-old Eryetha Mayberry depicts former nursing home aide, Lucy Gakunga, forcing latex gloves into the victim’s mouth. In later footage, Gakunga, along with another former employee, are seen taunting, pushing, and thumping Mayberry on the head. One incident shows the two former employees jerking Mayberry out of her wheelchair. Furthermore, in an attempt to get her to lay in her bed, they forcefully shoved her head down.
Mayberry, who suffers from dementia, couldn’t remember what happened to her. However, her three daughters suspected that someone was stealing from their mother, which is what prompted them to install a hidden camera. Daughter Doris Racher was surprised to find that her mother was also being abused:
“Low and behold, this is what was on there. First time was horrible, horrible, I couldn’t sleep that night.”
Gakunga was found guilty of elderly abuse and has been sentenced to two years in jail. The other employee, Caroline Kaskea, is currently on the run and evading police.
Mayberry died five months later.
In addition to criminal charges, both Gakunga and Kaskea could face criminal charges should the family retain a nursing home abuse lawyer and file a personal injury lawsuit on behalf of the victim.
