The death of a nursing home resident at Newport Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in New Jersey has been classified as a homicide. The death was the result of a fight between two dementia patients.
The altercation, however, appears to be a case of self defense as one resident tried to throw a television at the other and was hit in the head with a plastic garbage can by the other resident. The blow caused a cut on the attacking residents head and he died a few days later from a brain hemorrhage.
Although labeled a homicide, the resident who acted in defense of himself has not been charged with a crime.
“A death following resident on resident nursing home abuse is very rare,” said Marilyn Riley, spokeswoman for the state Department of Health and Senior Services.
Resident on resident abuse in nursing homes is another form of nursing home abuse. If you or a family member has been a victim of another nursing home resident’s abuse you should contact authorities immediately and get in touch with a qualified nursing home abuse lawyer.
