June 15th will mark the 7th Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The National Center on Elder Abuse is encouraging everyone to get involved and help bring the disturbing nationwide problem of elder abuse to everyone’s attention.
The NCEA suggests organizations, businesses, and families do their part by organizing or attending an Elder Abuse Awareness event, or volunteering some time to help seniors at various senior groups. Another great idea is visiting an elderly neighbor that lives alone and make sure they are being properly cared for.
Elder Abuse Awareness Day also highlights the nursing home abuse and neglect problem we have in our country. If you have a family member in a nursing home this would be a good time to make sure everything is going well with them. If you notice any signs of abuse or neglect, take action by talking with the nursing home administration and the police if necessary. You can also contact a nursing home abuse attorney.
Elder Abuse Awareness Day is a day dedicated to bringing awareness about elder abuse, but we need to keep nursing home abuse and other types of elder abuse in mind year round and take action to end this abuse.
